VASCAM CONCERT 2017

Ngàn Khơi Chorus's debut with VASCAM

On Life. A Narrative Concert

Sunday, March 26, 2017 - 4 PM

Musco Center for the Arts

Orange, CA

The first of its kind ever presented to the Vietnamese-American community, ON LIFE emphasizes music in the cultivated tradition by Vietnamese-Americans and Vietnamese overseas: Cung Tiến, Tôn Thất Tiết, and P.Q. Phan.

ON LIFE is an artistic vision which reflects, embraces, and inspires the value of our community and society. You’ll have it all: the affirmation of one’s identity; a celebration of an empowered self; a sense of sadness, happiness, reminiscence, loneliness, and celebration—all via provocative narration and striking images, lustrous songs and colorful solo performances. Most special is the West-coast premiere of selected scenes from P.Q. Phan’s grand opera The Tale of Lady Thị Kính. The scenes portray the transcending journey of an innocent girl as she overcomes hardships and injustice to become Buddha in the people’s hearts. In this thousand-year-old Vietnamese folk tale, the iconic image of Lady Thị Kính projects light on compassion, love and selflessness.

Presenting in the Inaugural Season of the MUSCO hall (of MUSCO Center for the Arts in Orange, California) ON LIFE offers a high cultural interdisciplinary musical art while making it relevant to the community and its audience. To achieve this, VASCAM collaborates with a community-based non-profit group, Ngàn Khơi Chorus, with respected visual artists and talented musicians from the community and across the country. The end result: ON LIFE involves 40 artists including seven soloists, a 10-piece orchestra with a conductor, an 18-people chorus, two visual artists, and three composers.
